Papers consist of a transcript of Richard McWilliams' diary, edited and annotated by Keith Keller in 2006, entitled "Journal of Richard McWilliams, Corporal, Company B, 98th Illinois Infantry." The Keller transcript includes biographical information on McWilliams and a photograph of his grave. The diary skips from 9 July 1864 to 1 January 1865. McWilliams notes General Robert E. Lee's surrender on 16 April 1865, Lincoln's assassination on 24 April 1865, and the capture of Jefferson Davis on 12 May 12 1865. On 7 July 1865, he noted his last day as a soldier.
